Why Connecting Your Instagram Account Requires a Facebook Account
When you try to connect your Instagram account in ClickSocial, you might notice that the process directs you to log in to Facebook or requires you to interact with Facebook settings. This can be confusing, especially if you primarily use Instagram and not Facebook.
Due to how Meta’s APIs (the systems that allow ClickSocial to interact with Facebook and Instagram) are designed, connecting an Instagram account to ClickSocial requires that you have a Professional or Business Instagram account that is linked to a Facebook Page.
- Your Instagram account must be a Professional or Business account. If your account is currently a Personal account, the connection process will automatically guide you through converting it.
- Your Business Instagram account must be linked to a Facebook Page. You do not need to actively use Facebook or the linked Page, but this association is necessary for the connection to work through Meta’s system.
Why You’re Directed to Facebook
The redirection to Facebook during the Instagram connection process is expected behavior. Since the Instagram API relies on its connection to Facebook, the authorization process begins through Facebook’s system.
Even though you are trying to connect Instagram, you will first log into the Facebook account that is linked to your Instagram Business account. If you are already logged into Facebook in your browser, it should use that authenticated session. You will then be guided through selecting the associated Instagram account to connect.
Troubleshooting Connection Issues & Granting Permissions
Sometimes, even after going through the process, the accounts may not appear as connected. A common reason for connection issues is not granting ClickSocial the necessary permissions during the authorization flow.
When prompted by Facebook/Meta during the connection process, you may need to opt in to all current and future Pages and Businesses that ClickSocial requests access to. This seems to resolve issues where accounts are not added correctly. If you only select specific pages, you might need to go through the connection process again later to connect new accounts.
Looking Ahead
We understand that requiring a Facebook account and a linked Facebook Page to connect Instagram might not be ideal for all users. The good news is that we are investigating a new connection method that is planned to not require Facebook at all, only Instagram. We will provide updates as soon as this becomes available.
